What is EMDR?
EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is and evidenced-based psychotherapy that utilizes bilateral stimulation (BLS) of the body to tap into the neurological pathways related to troubling and traumatic experiences in the past that continue to effect us in the present.  BLS, along with the skills of a well-trained and experience therapist, allows the body and mind to naturally move toward healing where previously there was a sense of being stuck.  
When we experience a minor or major trauma, the memories are stored in disconnected fragments in our brain.  Although we don't know exactly how it works, BLS seems to allow all the parts of the brain to function fully and in a cooperative manner, thus allowing our body's natural striving toward healing to proceed. We can be emotionally, cognitively, physically and spiritually triggered without even understanding the original source of the problem.  The therapist assists the client in activating the target memories fully and helps to unblock looping pathways that block reprocessing to completion.

The end result is that the original memory now is experienced as neutral instead of being highly emotionally charged.  This neutrality allows us to feel free and comfortable in ourselves in the present.  The process actually changes our beliefs about ourselves so that they are no longer faulty.
Originally used for PTSD, its use has been expanded to other issues that have been stored in the nervous system in a way that no longer serves us.   These issues include:
* Panic attacks
* Complicated grief
* Dissociation
* Disturbing memories
* Phobias
* Pain
* Performance anxiety
* Stress reduction
* Addictions
* Sexual and/or Physical abuse
* Personality Disorders
* Attachment deficits

Working with Deirdre using EMDR continues to transform my life in a profound way. Many years of traditional talk therapy had left me better able to understand my own trauma and why I function the way I do. However I still felt trapped in a cycle: stuck playing out old habits, holding the root of my fear at a distance, feeling stuck and unable to create the life I wanted.
Returning to the scene of early childhood trauma through visualization, re-creating, and imagination work was frightening at first, but it has been unbelievably powerful. By using the EMDR techniques, I'm able to interact with a memory as a malleable thing, working through it until eventually it feels neutral and distant, a simple moment in the past instead of a terror being re-experienced in the present.
